My granny is the most ladylike person I have ever met and such an inspiration. She turned 88 on the 18th of April this year and since I can remember I have not seen her a day where she was not dressed perfectly. She is such a lady! She is a wonderful person and always spoiled us with all her delicious baked goods! Since my granny moved to Chrismar Villas she does not bake anymore and I really miss her koeksisters, so I decided I will give her recipe a try. It came out quite ‘deliciously’ or so I have heard and then some people wanted the recipe. Be careful when you are baking the koeksisters not to burn yourself with the hot oil! So here you go! Enjoy! 🙂
Ingredients for the koeksister dough
4 cups of cake flour
2 table spoons sugar
1 table spoon butter
5 teaspoons of baking powder (level)
1 teaspoon of salt
1/2 a cup of milk
1/2 a cup of water
Mix the butter, sugar, baking powder, salt and flour together and add the eggs, milk and water, knead all of this well and let the dough stand until the next morning.
Ingredients for the syrup
8 cups of sugar (I used only 6 cups and it tasted nice – depending on how sweet you want your koeksisters.)
4 cups of water
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
1 teaspoon of lemon essence (I squeezed the juice of one lemon into my syrup.)
Stir the sugar in the water until it has all dissolved. Let the syrup boil for four minutes.
Let the syrup cool down. Add the vanilla and lemon essence.
Bake the koeksisters in hot oil and then dip them into the syrup for a few minutes.
